![]() ![]() The 'Digms do image better, but the Bostons aren't that far behind. With further listenings I kept going back to the BAs. The SE-1s have it in midrange smoothness and upper detail over the A60s, but the A60s kept drawing me into the music rather than the details. Through the A60s the bass was tight, controlled, well defined and very musical. With the Paradgm's the bass was boomy and bloated. I pretty much used the whole album, but put my concentration on "Sugar Free Jazz" with its strong low B from the bull fiddle. During this I also compared them with my Paradigm SE-1s. My disc for that was Soul Coughing "Ruby Vroom" (I also tried their "Irresistible Bliss" but RV was my standard for this). What I really love is how treated program material with uber strong bass content. I threw various types of music at them and they handled them with aplomb. To keep this relatively short, I was reminded as to why I fell in love with these speakers. I was ready to do some serious listening. Finally hooking them up and firing up the gear. I had also bought some 16" stands for them that week as well and mounted the speakers on them. ![]() They showed up a week later and I replaced the blown tweeter. Needless to say I jumped on that and set my highest bid to be still be affordable, but high enough that someone wanting to snag them at the last minute wouldn't have enough time to bid high enough to do such (it worked). So, I do just that and I happen on a pair of them and the bidding had started at $14. I called BA to order a replacement CFT3 (they told me they had them in stock the year before) only to be told they no longer had the part in stock and to look on eBay. Well, financial stuff happens and a year passes before I can get the tweeter. Now, realizing that eBay is a crapshoot, instead of getting all pissy and bitching to the guy who sold them to me, I quietly put them off to the side (noting which one had the blown tweeter) and decided to just wait until I could afford a new one or look for a good used one. The woofers had been refomed (very well indeed), but when I plugged them in I noticed that one of the tweeters was blown. A week later they showed up in what looked like great shape. I decided "why not" and pulled the trigger. So, I looked at some of the series II offerings and found a pair for around $85 (before shipping). The series Is that were listed had at least one, if not both, tweeters mashed in. Then I decided to check out the Boston Acoustics. The first three were too expensive for what I was looking for and I kind of shyed away from the CS Model 6 for some weird reason. At first I was checking out AR, Advent, KLH and Cambridge Soundworks. Fast forward to December of 2013 (and four sets of speakers later) and I had a bit of extra cash, so I decided to peruse eBay. In hindsight I think it was their positioning in the room that worked against them. A few years later I heard a pair of series II A60s and for some reason I wasn't as impressed. I had a pair of Pioneer HPM 500s that absolutely paled in comparison. Though it wasn't very deep, I found it to be very tight and well defined. What I noticed was that the treble was very delicate with a smooth midrange, but what really impressed me was the bass. ![]() A friend had a pair of Boston Acoustic A60 Series Is. ![]() Years ago (around '86) I heard what I considered to be my first really good speaker. ![]()
